For the jerk who actually believes I was comparing being Muslim with having Downs syndrome:
This is so silly. I'm a non-neurotypical. My point is about stereotyping and dismissal, which is what you're doing right now. Physical differences of debate opponents do not contribute to arguments re: evolution & cosmology. Do you know any ppl w/Downs syndrome? Do you know their capacities? That's the point: assumptions get us nowhere and just stigmatize people.

Don't put words in my mouth; I can speak for myself. I don't decry TF for having no respect for her religion; I criticize him for using her physical appearance as an argument against her position on evolution, which is irrational, sexist and anti-Semitic.

Now, you have done EXACTLY what is keeping the so-called "atheist community" from not stagnating: you refused to listen to my whole statement, came to some pretty reactionary "conclusions" about my position without hearing me out, and chose to condemn me in ignorance. Is this because TF is a sacred cow of yours and you take personally my criticism of his debate tactics? I'm asking, not assuming.

I am a person with disabilities; I see how atheists on youtube liberally spread slurs about people like me: "brain dead, retarded, stupid, crazy, idiot......" keeping us in closets, chains, silence, shame, fear . . .

Your assumptions about me are the only hypocrisy I see here. And neither you, nor TF, knows why Amenakin wears a hijab, because neither of you ASKED her.

YOU WANTED TO DISMISS ME because I was making you uncomfortable; that's what I think. I think you were just looking for an excuse to silence another, uppity woman who dares question the wisdom of a "superstar" of atheist YouTube. I never stood a chance with you. It's your loss.

Ask TheLivingDinosaur, Goxster, Ms.Knight5, TheMudbrooker and others who've commented supportively on this video how hypocritical I am.

The part of the video you refused to see is about my personal journey of deconversion, coming out and finding a way to speak my truth for the first time in my life as a woman with disabilities, who is Queer. You also missed how I believe the atheist YouTube community can remain vibrant and proactive in the world, and model alternatives to people who've never been exposed to the world outside superstition. As I said, it's your loss. I expected narrow-minded people like you. I'm neither surprised nor taken aback by this nit picking.

China Disabled People's Art Troupe

What people really need is just enough space and respect to be who they truly are, without the prejudices or assumptions of others, blocking them from their capabilities.

Imagine living with a disability. Imagine doing it in China. Yeah.

Guanyin or Kwanyin, the Goddess of Mercy.

~ China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe, "Thousand-hand Guan Yin" Guan Yin is a Chinese goddess.Feeling music through speakers and guided by hand gestures, a troupe of deaf dancers in Beijing take steps to champion the rights of disabled people across the world ~

" Being deaf and mute, these disabled female performers endure pain and suffering in vigorous training, simply to deliver a message of love to mankind. "

Guanyin or Kwanyin (aka), the Goddess of Mercy also known by Westerners as the Chinese Goddess of love and compassion has long occupied a unique place not only in Buddhism, but also in Chinese culture. The Chinese word "Guanyin is an abbreviation of "Guan shi yin" which denotes" seeing the voice of the world if rendered literally. Such a deity can be called as the deity who looks in every direction or the "Regarder of the cries of suffering beings".

According to legend, Guanyin, the youngest daughter of a king, defied her father when he sought a husband for her. The angry king sent her away to a monastery with instructions that she should be compelled to obey. This only strengthened her resolve. So the king set fire to the monastery and ordered her execution when she was caught sitting erect reciting sutras. As she was about to be beheaded, the sword broke into two and a tiger from nowhere carried her away to a forest.

One day from afar she saw the king was sick and not responding to treatment, so she severed her arms and eyes to sacrifice them for him. The grieved king besought heaven and earth to make his daughter whole again. Soon, Guanyin had arms and eyes by the thousand, and bowing before her father, she urged him to practise good deeds to which the king readily agreed.

Actually legends have Guanyin in various forms. But the story of the Goddess in this one-thousand-hand form has had an immense appeal. Thus the thousand-hand deity is no longer an exclusive religious symbol but has become a popular cultural icon to religious followers and common folks alike.

The legendary Thousand-hand Guanyin as interpreted by the special artists plucked the heartstrings of the audience. In their rendition of the legendary goddess, they not only demonstrated their superb dancing skills in perfect unison with elegant and forceful movements, but attained a ye higher level to turn it into a live myth full of artistic appeal and stirring power on the stage.

Though we only saw one leading dancer on the stage, we saw in our mind's eye a whole collective where 21 troupe members fused together as one human being with one shared heart. What we saw on the stage was the one Thousand-hand Guanyin, serene, holy and beautiful, that existed in each of the dancers' hearts. While enjoying the colourful performance, we experienced a profound sense of tranquility and composure, a process of cleansing and purification of our souls.

We spetators can hardly imagine how much time and effort these artists must have invested in bringing about such a unique work of art. And only a collective with all its crew members bound together in unity, harmony and friendliness could make it.

The image of the Thousand-hand Guanyin is symbolic of maternal love and infinite compassion.

And the enlightenment we gain from the performance itself is that people with disabilities are also creators of both material and spiritual wealth. Such a spirit of perseverance in pursuing and creating a better life in the face of adversity should be followed by all of us.

A clip taken from a film called "My Dream".
Directed by Wang Honghai.

In his film My Dream, director Wang Hong Hai pays tribute to the stunning works in dance and music performed internationally by the 84 members of the China Handicapped Performers' Troupe. During a one-year period, Wang and his production staff lived together with the members of the troupe, recording their daily lives, practice sessions and efforts the performers made to train their bodies. The troupe was founded in Beijing in 1987 by a group of 30 artists and includes performers who have hearing or sight impairments. The film covers their history, process and performances. My Dream is a combination of documentary and visual poetry that transcends the limits of language and geography.

Please enjoy.

"Coexist?" What about me?

Share |

Uploaded by on Nov 13, 2011
Were you there, when dogmatic suspicions trumped the laws of other kinds?
Did you see me stand upon the cart- trembling in my binds?
Did you see me stare down on their faces with disgust
As those puritans did rally for the cause they knew was just?
Did you hear the noose man's order just before he draped my neck,
with a bulky length of rope above my temporary deck?
Did you smell the burning flesh of the thousands who before
had been burned upon the stake for the same crime I now bore?
Did you feel the pangs of lessons lost that history had to teach
As I looked upon the ground where my feet were out of reach?
As they pulled my cart away, did you hear the axel squeal,
while death's grip seized my throat, at the turning of the wheel?
Did you see the branch above me shake when laden with my weight?
Did join the crowd's conviction, or did you hesitate?
Did you find it at all peculiar, as the noose did seal my fate
That a witch my great stature couldn't even levitate?
That a dark demonic creature who could sap a down of hope
Was vanquished by some binder twine and a strand of inch-thick rope?
Did you smile with satisfaction when you heard my frail spine break,
Or did you stare into my pallid face and accept the great mistake?

I pointed out to a liberal friend that I won't "share" the "Coexist" flag on my FaceBook page, because it doesn't include representation of atheism.
A comment I made doesn't appear, anymore, on the thread. Could be a FaceBook glitch; could have been removed.

Atheists are actively persecuted in USA. We get fired, evicted, harassed, excluded, physically attacked, stalked. We can lose our children in a court of law. We are vilified by MANY sects on the planet. In some countries, laws say we are to be killed outright. My conclusion: religion kills.

I explained my position in this thread, but the comment is not posted. I don't know if that is a FaceBook glitch, or if my comment was intentionally removed. To prevent this happening again, I have put my statement on my blog. It can be read below. Until atheism is part of the intentional dialogue on tolerance, until people of religion acknowledge and do something about their "brothers and sisters" who are actively seeking to persecute us, I cannot, in good conscience, post that image on my FaceBook feed. Ironi cally, I OWN and DISPLAY that flag at my home, and have been accused of Satanism in my redneck, fundamentalist community, as a result. Now, imagine if those same people knew: I'm not only an atheist; I'm a Queer, too. If you're not committed to protecting MY civil rights, I cannot, in good conscience, promote your message

I received a post on my FaceBook wall about the whole thing, and replied:
I don't see this as a personal attack by you. Please understand that. What I do see is that atheism, as an alternative perspective on the matter of faith, and atheists, as persons who are quite literally targeted by insecure ass hats who use their faith as an excuse to persecute, are too frequently left out of the dialogue by people who are discussing tolerance, coexistence, etc. This even happens in Unitarian Universalism, which is a fellowship of churches that state, specifically, that atheism and agnosticism -- as well as ALL faith traditions -- are welcome and respected in their fellowships. Then, if one of us has the nerve to speak up and say, "wait a minute! I have civil rights, too!" we get to hear how "angry, militant and provocative" we're being and how we don't respect the faiths of other folk. See, I DON'T respect faith; I respect reason. But I personally don't care what others believe, as long as they don't impose it on me. These days, that seldom happens. We HAVE to speak up for ourselves. There's a deliberate, calculated, theocratic movement afoot in USA right now. Atheists, Queers, other faiths & even denominations are being attacked. If we don't speak up, who will speak up for us? So, I felt it my responsibility to remind people of faith, once again, that I have a right to live in peace, too.

Rational Revolution

Dude! You totally edited the SNOT out of this baby! Let's see: it's about six and a half minutes long. That's like sixty hours work, the way you crammed images into it! Holy potatoes! Yeah, we need more tubes like this. We need anthems. We need courage and solidarity and high fives and moral support and validation. As the "Act Up" folk say, "Silence = Death," and we all on the verge of that these days! Excellent work! Passing it along on Facebook & my blog.

License to Bully?

4. One organization's look at anti-bullying statutes and policies across the United States: http://www.bullypolice.org/

5. For 1st Amendment purposes, 'religion' is not limited to the beliefs and practices of believers. The United States Supreme Court and lower courts have said that atheism comes within the scope of the amendment's religion guarantees. See, e.g., Welsh v. United States http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?navby=case&court=us&... and
Kaufman v. McCaughtry http://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-7th-circuit/1467028.html

6. On the question that keeps coming up in comments about whether public schools may restrict speech, see, e.g., the United States Supreme Court's decision in Tinker v. Des Moines School District: http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/comm/free_speech/tinker.html As the Court said in that case, schools may limit free speech in various ways, but public schools are not "enclaves of totalitarianism" where school officials "possess absolute authority." Students "are 'persons' under our Constitution" and, as such, "are possessed of fundamental rights which the State must respect."

Symphony of Science - Onward to the Edge!

Uploaded by on Nov 9, 2011

mp3:http://bit.ly/oRYyiV
A musical investigation into the importance and inspirational qualities of space exploration (human and robotic), as well as a look at some of the amazing worlds in our solar system. Featuring Neil deGrasse Tyson, Brian Cox, and Carolyn Porco.

"Onward to the Edge" is the 12th installment in the Symphony of Science series. Materials used in this video are from :

My Favorite Universe
BBC Wonders of the Solar System
Carolyn Porco TED talk
NatGeo "Guide to the Planets"

Thanks for watching!

Lyrics:

[Neil deGrasse Tyson]
The act of moving onward means we pass these sign posts
One of them was first leaving earth
The next one is hanging out on the moon
What's next? The planets

Onward to the edge
We're moving onward to the edge
Here we are together
This fragile little world

[Brian Cox]
This is our sun
Just another star in a sea of stars
The heart of the solar system
Just another star in a sea of stars

Mercury is the closest planet
This tortured piece of rock has been stripped naked

[Tyson]
The moon has a sky
It has a horizon
It's another world

It's got earth in the sky
Just the way we have the moon in the sky

(refrain)

We're not the only world to think about
Worlds unnumbered
We're not the only world to think about
Think about worlds unnumbered

[Carolyn Porco]
There is a powerful recognition
That stirs within us
When we see our own little blue ocean planet
In the skies of other worlds

The Saturn system
Offers splendor beyond compare
Because of its rings
And very diverse moons

[Tyson]
These are no longer abstractions
These are worlds
Maybe there's life there
They've changed how we think about Earth

[Cox]
A mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam
The pale blue dot

(refrain)

The laws of nature create
Vastly different worlds
With the tiniest of changes

[Tyson]
When I reach to the edge of the universe
I do so knowing that along some paths of cosmic discovery
There are times when, at least for now,
One must be content to love the questions themselves

Islamophobes Call 'ME' A Hypocrite???

James, this is brilliant and, IMO, spot on. Some of the most strident atheists give tacit support to both xian & muslim extremists with their OWN sexism and homophobia, all the time. No muslim -- or xian, for that matter -- has ever called me a "cunt, whore, bitch, twat" on YouTube; atheists, from whose channels I've unsubscribed (exception: TheLivingDinosaur, but I'll send him a private video on the issue) use these epithets all the time. I'm sharing this with some folks I know. Thank you!

Anonymous-Operation Facebook #OpFacebook

Uploaded by on Nov 5, 2011

Greetings world, we are Anonymous.

There have been rumors of an impending attack on Facebook by Anonymous. This, however, is not true.

Though we do not agree with Facebook's privacy procedures, we understand that such an attack would not only hurt the people, but also weaken our cause.

By the same token, though, there may very well be an attack on Facebook. Anyone can call themselves Anonymous, and do what they will, but the collective will of Anonymous is that Facebook should be left alone.

We would ask any such hactivists to not do this attack in the name of Anonymous. Facebook allows friends and families to connect with one another. Anonymous understand the importance of this.

and renew our zeal for freedom. Let us not tarnish our reputation by participating in this meaningless attack.

The Legion has spoken.

We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect Us.
