Asbestos Cigarette Filters

The P. Lorillard Tobacco Company used crocidolite asbestos in the filters it used on KENT cigarettes from 1952 until 1956. Hollingsworth & Vose Co. made the 'Mictronite' filters that Lorillard used in the cigarettes. Between 1952-1956 Lorillard sold 13 billion Kent Micronite asbestos filtered cigarettes.

 

A 1950s medical journal rated Kent as one of the best cigarettes for removing harmful tar.

The packages above represent a typical Kent cigarette with the micronite filter package. The filter media is made of crimped layers of paper, typical filter fibers and crocidolite fibers.

Manufacturing cigarette filters using the 'dry' process; this involved mixing the crocidolite and other substances and depositing the mixture onto filter paper.

There is an excellent eBay seller that when listed has some the best Kent micronite filter displays accompanied with a very detailed explanation behind the micronite filter and its composition, see star-stuff. Also there have been many in-depth analysis of the Kent Cigarette one such research document is titled Crocidolite Asbestos Fibers in Smoke from Original Kent Cigarettes, by William E. Longo, Mark W. Rigler and John Slade.

Other Asbestos Uses With Tobacco

A compound of tobacco and asbestos was mixed to make paper for cigarettes. The paper is cut up like cigarette paper, and a number of leaflets are put together in book form. To use it you take a leaf and roll it up between your fingers, and it is ready for smoking. As asbestos has neither taste nor smell it does not interfere with the flavor of tobacco, while the veil effects of smoking are obviated.

For pipe tobacco the mixture was made up so that the asbestos is not observable in the mixture. It was very cool to smoke and consumed the nicotine in the tobacco, while it burned right down to the bottom of the pipe. A pipe smoked  with this tobacco-asbestos was said to be always dry and left no filthy moisture in the stem.

DOZENS of these appeared on the KGLPfm Facebook page yesterday, three or more pages deep! They covered such scintillating and urgent topics as where's the best karaoke, who's the 3rd best bartender and which club has the best, live DJ.

Here's my official comment to Santa Fe Reporter's Facebook post, asking for comments on the dozens upon dozens of meaningless posts with which they barraged us yesterday:

Trying to inform our listeners here; needed to post important news, events, upcoming programs, etc. I'm a volunteer for a TINY station with small budget, and this was a LOT of extra work, weeding through SFR posts to get to important news stories. Literally took me 2 extra hours yesterday. "Disliked" SFR as private citizen, as a result. Our wall cluttered with spam, almost unusable. Just do what "Weekly Alibi" does with "Best of 'Burque:" Write an actual ARTICLE, with ONE LINK to it and post it on FaceBook. This looked very unprofessional, selfish and immature. Rogi Riverstone

Dear SPAMta FAIL RESORTER,

Yesterday, I "unliked" [sic] you on FaceBook, thanks to your unrelenting spam. Even as readers began commenting with complaints, you ignored us and persisted in inundating us with useless and very localized posts of narrow-cast interest. 


That little stunt gave the following impressions:
You don't give a damn about your readers' needs and will always choose cheap trick self promotion, over communication (which is what journalism is SUPPOSED to be), every time.
You don't mind stealing other people's bandwidth. That was Zuckerberg's dime you were on. Now, I, personally, detest that little emperor. I have to dodge invasions of privacy, facial recognition software, whims that remove and archive my favorite -- albeit modest -- groups inane advertizing and stalker tools to let people know where I am at any given moment.


But KGLPfm in Gallup, New Mexico is a tiny station, in a tiny town, with a tiny budget. They can't even afford to pay me to keep up the blog and FaceBook page. They can't afford a news department, which is WHY I subscribe to as many news outlets in New Mexico, including yours, as possible: to keep our listeners informed.


I have NO idea whether you people actually published any NEWS yesterday; I quit reading after the second dozen spam posts.


Now, here's what you REALLY look like to me: It looks like you hired some pimple-faced, freshman "communications" major who still dots an "i" with a smiley face or a heart, who thought it would be "kewl" to do this clever, silly trick with other people's bandwidth, time and eyes.


And it looks like either your Editor in Chief didn't know it happened (which s/he should), or is so toasted, s/he should be fired from the Santa Fe Reporter and go to work at High Times, where such drooling drivel will be appreciated.


In an age of Rupert Murdoch, corporate mouthpieces, KKKarl Rove's whisper campaigns and Tea Parody, WE NEED NEWS we can TRUST, especially in such an economically-disadvantaged state as New Mexico! There's a difference between self-promotion and sociopathic self-interest, and you have DEFINITELY crossed the line!

Disney's/Burton's "Alice in Wonderland"

THIS IS NOT A REVIEW. I started watching. I thought: interesting commentary on the chattel condition of women of the period; this has promise. Then,I smelled Tim Burton, looked it up and yes, sure enough. Of course: Johnny Depp. Oh, yes, the smell was coming from the predictable Danny Elfman score (he used to be so unique. Remember SCIZZORHANDS? How fresh the scores sounded back then!) After a tediously long fall down a rabbit hole to prove this is in 3-D, sure enough, Alice opens the door and there are the recycled topiary animals from EDWARD SCIZZORHANDS! And then, the full blast of CGI kicked in. They've broken the main rule of AIW: Never depict the Jabberwock or the Bandersnatch, the latter of whom looks suspiciously like the cousin of the John Goodman's character in MONSTERS, INC. Those are MINE to imagine; I do not want your images in my head. They are under mushrooms as I speak, dodging the Bandersnatch and I shall watch no more. It's dark; it's blue. It had a lot of production money thrown at it, but Burton is now a brand, not an artist. I too much miss the good old days, when we were young and innocent. I will not fall down this rabbit hole again. Rogi Riverstone.

I am a grrl; I don't like boyz movies with gratuitous bloodshed, chase scenes and screaming. I don't like vampire movies; when I figured out this was 1, I almost killed it. 

This film was made by people who love what they're doing. Score and sound engineering were crisp and clear; CGI was intrinsic to the plot: not a geek wet dream of Look What I Can Do With A Computer. The scene of a rivet, falling from a passenger jet, through a ventilation shaft, into a woman's cup was AWESOME. The editing in this was dazzling: so tight, so illuminating.

The writing? Not sure, as I do not speak Russian, but this is full of humor and self-analysis. I absolutely suspect there are puns in this that do not translate into English and one, accidentally or because we both use the same expression, that does.

The Universe is divided into 2 gangs of thugs who have been fighting, if the costumes are an indication, since the Dark Ages. The so-called good guys drive souped-up armored truck slash Batmobiles in McDonalds yellow and red. This is just a very fun film that respects its audience, even if they are primarily pimply boyz. I would watch again and probably will. Rogi RIverstone

BLURB INCORRECT: NOBODY heard "strange voices commanding them to kill!" And it is NOT confusing, if you know how to pay attention! You just need to approach this as a mystery in horror genre: what is causing this, and is there a twist? The main premise is that paranoia is caused by misinterpreting reality until every person becomes a malicious suspect. Is the cause metaphysical, like a ghost or a demon? Is it caused by listening to someone who is warped? Does it generate completely inside your own head? Some dark scenes were not well lighted and appeared muddy. Soundtrack and sound effects were awesome. Decent acting. Really nice sets and locations. Not enough Korean horror shows locations in Korea. A lot of Korean horror has humor in it. This one doesn't rely on the little sub-plot jokes to cause giggles and relieve tension along the way. The whole film is the joke, and makes sense at the punch line. Korean film often tackles pretty sophisticated subjects, with horror as an excuse to examine them. This film is no exception: maybe curses, ghosts and demons are the products of our own minds. Paul Ryan walked in a parade for some reason today and there was a large contingency of people in Kenosha at the parade protesting his violent budget plan. There was a Facebook flashmob planned by the Facebook page The Hippies Were Right https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Hippies-were-Right/131351033605798 to have people speak their mind to Ryan's Facebook page while the live protest was going on. During the two from 1pm-3pm over 700 comments were left by who knows how many people(less than 700 as lots of people posted several times). I had to act quickly to put this together because from the time that I started many posts had already been deleted from the page.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Americans aren't having enough fun!

n this episode of Behind the Seams we head to the dusty city of Matehuala, Mexico in search of the pointiest long-toed cowboy boots ever made. Over the past year, the botas vaqueras exóticas phenomenon has overrun the rodeo dance floors and clubs of this area and even spreading North into Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and any place where big groups of immigrant Mexicans have taken root. We made our way to Desierto Light, one of the clubs in this area where party promoters host dance-offs to music known as Tribal Guarachero. For the finals competition, the 17-year-old prodigy DJ Erick Rincón of the 3ballMTY crew performed for a crowd of adoring pointy-boot wearing raver cowboys.

The opening credits are grizzly. They're a montage of the torture endured by hunted animals. It could have been produced by PETA. Koreans have a sharp, strong ability to communicate deep subjects artfully. But the opening credits are the only gore or gruesome in this film.

A silly farce. Very juvenile, but not in that obnoxious way of US movies: no bodily functions, boob jokes, etc. Yes, people fall down a lot. And the boar looks like a worn-out Steiff bear with tusks so big, it could not possibly eat anything tougher than peanut butter, since its mouth cannot close. LOTS of painful stunt work, done by the actors, themselves. Even the old guy is athletic. This will not make you porcine phobic; the pig is just an excuse for the actors to hop around like monkeys on crack.. STAY FOR THE CLOSING CREDITS! ALL of them! All the way to the very end. There are 2 plot threads that tie up there. It was fun, not profound. No heavy lifting for the brain. The fake organic farming cracked me up. Koreans have such humor about somber subjects; nothing is sacred. This is JAWS from start to finish: barrels replaced by GPS. Small towns are the same, all over the world, I think. Rogi Riverstone

MOVIE: "Trumbo"

Tonight, completely by coincidence, I stumbled upon "Trumbo" at NetFlix. Although I have rudimentary knowledge of the effects of HUAC, I cannot retain names well, so knew nothing of the ordeals of Dalton Trumbo and his family.

I just heard reading of a letter he composed to school personnel about the persecutions of his daughters by school mates, encouraged by the PTA and the Bluebirds (a girls' scouting group). Now, Trumbo is a brilliant writer, granted. But the pathos, the moral authority, the articulate and disciplined outrage of his words to those heathens. . . . well, needless to say, I wished Trumbo were alive, that he was my daddy, and that those words had been written to defend and protect me.

So, without permission, I will be recording that particular letter and keeping it in my personal archives, to give me strength when I actually begin to believe the torch-and pitchfork-wielding monsters who've tried, so clumsily, to destroy me this past year. I need to hear those words again and again, until my tired, traumatized and damaged brain can begin to accept them as my reality. You should listen to that letter. It appears apx. 1:10 into the film. I don't know the actor's name who reads it, but you'd swear it had happened to his own child.

I am watching from two to as many as six films a day, restoring my memory and my spirits, analyzing storytelling and editing techniques, validating reality for myself as best I can and trying to have images and sounds in my head that can help me heal.

At first, I felt guilty: lying around all day, watching films, doing the minimum of labor necessary to sustain my and my animals' basic survival needs.

Now, I see how deprived I've been of intellectual, spiritual, moral, ethical, creative and playful stimulation in the past, three years.

A person like me can't live in that much denial of self for that long without sustaining some damage to my ability to imagine. I am "cramming" my way back to my own humanity by watching films. I can retain moving images as memories far better than I can written or even spoken word.

And I am learning what works, and does not work, in the art of story telling. I even read NetFlix's viewers' reviews of particular films, just to see what the unwashed masses' reactions are.

It won't be much longer, I think, before I find a way to tell my truth without the self pity (not actually a negative thing or sign of weakness; go look it up) that I find necessary right now in my recovery process.

I will be back. I'll post the audio on PRX and write you with links. If you have comments, criticisms or suggestions, I welcome them.

Whether I find a paying market or not doesn't matter. I have GOT to tell my story and I have got to make it available to be heard.

I'll find a way.

Bob Anderson rebukes KUNM call in show

Anderson: "It was like bar talk more than educational."

That sounds a whole lot tlike elitist snobbery, to me. Most people
serving in the military -- besides officers -- are working class. They
don't usually speak like the ivory tower types.

What, exactly, has Anderson produced in the way of program content
which deals with the experiences of veterans? Wouldn't his
organization, "Stop the War Machine," (SWM) want to contribute to the
healing of our wounded? Or ought we stop the wars by ignoring the
warriors? Those injured warriors bring the wars right back into our
communities, if anybody's been paying attention.

I'm on the SWM email list. Anderson once solicited the membership to
provide him with a CAR so he can stop the wars for oil. When I
suggested a 90 mpg scooter or electric bicycle, I was ignored.

I'm grateful Anderson is too apathetic to have heard my production,
"Wounded Warriors: Native American Veterans with PTSD." I'm glad those
veterans didn't get attacked by armchair activism: ignorane framed in
arrogance.

Do we allow veterans to SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES, or do we mandate
politically correct speech? Is this COMMUNITY radio, or COMMUNIST
radio? Are not veterans members of our community, whether we like them
or not? Don't THEY pay state taxes to fund KUNM, whether or not they
actually subscribe? Isn't it THEIR station, too? Haven't they earned
it at least as much as anybody else?

They haven't been living in the politically correct cliques for
decades. Forgive them their imperfections.

Given what they've gone through -- and in what a lethal, toxic system
they've gone through it, I'm amazed and humbled that they'd speak to
the rest of us, AT ALL, especially about such intimate trauma.

I listened to the Call In Show. Not only was I not offended by the
program, I was relieved. Lanie respectfully allowed her guests and
callers to speak THEIR truths to power, whether or not she agreed with
them.

We got to hear from a segment of our community that is too much
ignored by the COMMERCIAL media, let alone our own station.

I learned a lot from the program this morning. I was deeply moved and
deeply angered that veterans are so neglected by ALL of us.

And those of us who say we are struggling for the advantages of peace
ought to be the MOST supportive of those of us who are struggling with
the effects of war.

Lots of winter projects

My g/f & I are planning a 10-day trip, traveling the Santa Fe Trail from
here in Albuquerque all the way to Kansas City and back. We're shooting
video for an Independent Study project of hers at college. It'll be a
video documentary, based on a radio play she produced several years ago.

So, the truck needs cleaning out; bedding and cooking utensils need
washing; goats & chickens need extra feed (so do cats). Clothes need
packing; cameras need batteries, film, etc.

It's a lot of work. As usual, she can't help, because she works full
time and has other classes, too.

It's her last semester. She'll graduate, with honors, in May. Maybe then
I can fall apart! I've never known her without tremendous pressure on
her.

Besides all that, Dudette at http://net4tv.com Games has offered me a
job, writing about WebTV stuff for her users. I'll have a blog; it'll
have a forum, so readers can reply, etc. I'm also helping her set up
online greeting cards and email signatures.

So, I've been awful busy!

BTW: I'll be gone from the 9th through the 19th of February. We're
taking the WebTV and a small TV set with us. We'll periodically stay in
hotels. That way, we can post still photos online, check email, etc.
I'll try to post in my newsgroup and blogs then, but who knows?

Mostly, we'll be sleeping in the truck, on an air mattress, in February.
We go through Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and, of course, New
Mexico. Nothing like a camping trip, in the DEAD OF WINTER! brrr.
